Responsible access

The UIAA has produced guidelines and recommendations that can be downloaded to help you alleviate environmental and cultural pressures in areas where there are access issues already, and in countries with developing mountain tourism that may be confronted with access issues in the future if considerate and responsible practices are not implemented.

If there are issues or conflicts in the area you are choosing to visit, or live and climb, consider how you can work with the landowner or manager to help solve the problem. The UIAA and IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) have teamed up to produce a document on working with landowners and managers to help ensure responsible access to climbing areas.

The Argeos Charter provides an outline for a sustainable approach to mountain tourism. The document provides general advice for local communities who are experiencing the development of mountain tourism in their area.
