Access

The UIAA believes that everyone should be able to freely walk and climb in mountains and other areas of environmental and recreational value. But sometimes this is restricted through war, landowner apprehension, or regulation.

Rights of access are balanced by responsibility and care for the mountain landscape, bio- and geo-diversity and the cultures and people of the mountains.

The Access Commission works with international associations, and supports our member federations and others to facilitate access to areas while ensuring their environmental and cultural protection.

Responsible Access

Responsible access starts with research, before visiting a crag or mountain environment, to find out if there are any known issues; sensitive species, geology; or specific cultures or practices that may influence your visit. Thinking about local climbing ethics, local people and native flora and fauna will help ensure responsible access.

Access Campaigns

The Access Commission's campaigns range from providing guidance to working with and supporting member federations in their countries with specific issues. In recent years the commission has been involved in access negotiations in the Cordillera Blanca, Peru; the High Tatra, Slovakia and in Kashmir.

Youth and Environment

The Access Commission has clear links to many of the other UIAA commissions, in particular to the Mountain Protection and Youth commissions. The Access Commission sees today’s young climbers as ambassadors for the future of mountain environments and to promote efforts to enjoy our sport in these special habitats.

Development and Future Work

The Access Commission is preparing a four-year plan. The aim is to increase commission membership and geographical representation, increase and promote online resources for access information and increase the number and effectiveness of our partnerships. If you would like to become involved, please contact us.
