Global Youth Summit events 2010

Global Youth Summit events are held each year throughout Europe, as well as in Africa and Asia.
 
European Youth Ice Climbing Championship
January 16 - 17
Where: Saas Grund, Switzerland

International ski touring camp in Slovenia

Where: Komna Julian Alps
Who: Young mountaineers between 17 – 29 years old

An international ski touring camp took place from February 20-26 on the Komna plateau above Bohinj lake. Read the full report.

Rory Lowther Memorial Challenge in South Africa
March 5 - 7
Where: Swinburne, South Africa
Who: Participants of all ages

More than 250 mountaineers, including pupils and teachers from seven Gauteng (Johannesburg, Pretoria) and Kwa-Zulu Natal schools congregated at Swinburne in the Free State for the annual Rory Lowther Memorial Challenge. Go to event website or read the full report.

Climbing and trekking - Lake Ohrid in Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia

Where: UNESCO-protected Lake Ohrid
Who: Young people from 16 to 30 years of age

The main goal of this youth climbing and trekking camp was to bring climbers from all around the world together on the shores of beautiful Lake Ohrid to climb, trek and swim. The camp offered climbing in the mystic canyon of “Zli Dol”, trekking to the summit of “Galichica” (2,540m) and swimming in the lake. See the programme details.

Climb legendary Mt Kazbek in Georgia
July 10 - 17
Where: Kazbek Gorge mountains
Who: Young people from 16 years of age

The Club Mountain Traveller (CMT) on behalf of the Mountaineering & Climbing Association of Georgia invited young people to the international youth "Mountaineering School" in Georgia. The highlight was the summit attempt on Mt Kazbek (5,047m). See the programme details.

Trekking on the ancient salt routes in Italy
July 11 – 17
Where: Limone Piemonte - Sanremo - ITALY
Who: Young mountaineers between 14 – 17 years old

The path follows the ancient salt and oil routes laying between Liguria and Piemonte, and the final part of the well known “Via Alpina” trail. It also passes through a spectacular cave system, the “Piaggia Bella”.  See the programme details.

Youth Climbing without borders - Russia
July 11 - Aug 02
Where: Yekaterinburg Ural, Gorny Altay
Who: Ages 18-25 years

The Climbing Federation of Russia along with the Children’s Olympic Reserve School of Mountaineering Sports in Yekaterinburg, and the Youth Mountain Club “Voskhozhdenie” invite young people to participate in the International Youth Rock Climbing and Mountaineering festival “Europe – Asia 2010”. Route setting and rock climbing festival in Kazakhstan
July 15 - 25
Where: Akmolin region, Burabai
Who: Young people from 18 to 30 years of age

The goal of the festival is to develop a new area for climbing in Kazakhstan, as well as promote an exchange of experiences and rock climbing in the country. The event will also include an "on-sight marathon" with rock climbing competitions. See the programme details.

Climbing and hiking in Romania's Bicaz Gorges National Park
August 07 - 15
Where: Neamt county, Bicaz-Chei village in Carpathian Mountains
Who: Young people between 17 and 25 years

Four days of climbing and hiking. The event included a mountain walking/hiking/climbing day in Ceahlau Massif park (1,907m). Participants also had the option to make a cultural round trip to the city of Piatra Neamt and visit Moldavian mediaeval monasteries and the 40-km-long Bicaz Lake. See the programme details.

Rock Climbing Festival – Guamka, Russia
August 09 - 15
Where: Guamka, Krasnodar Region
Who: From children to seniors

This weeklong event included various climbing competitions for young and old who were also invited to take part in a trekking excursion to the Lagonaki Plateau, do canyoning or climb a via ferrata. The cultural programme included films, music, dancing and fireworks. See the programme details.

Crimea Rock Festival
September 17 - 26
Where: Sudak, Crimea, Ukraine
Who: Young people between 16 and 30 years

Rock climbing training, climb rock massifs with names like, Frog, Fortress and Elephant, swim in the Black Sea and learn about the history and geography of the region. See the programme details.
