The International Mountaineering and Climbing Federation (UIAA) brings together millions of men, women and children joined by their passion for mountains.

Our Mission Statement
The UIAA promotes the growth and protection of mountaineering and climbing worldwide by:

  • preserving their spirit and traditions
  • advancing safe and ethical mountain practices
  • promoting responsible access, culture and environmental protection
  • Supporting youth participation and the Olympic movement

Our activities
The UIAA fulfils its Mission Statement mainly through the work of its commissions, which make recommendations, set policy and advocate on behalf of the mountaineering community.

Ice Climbing World Cup 2012





Activities - what we do

Risk Management
Find out about the Safety Label, and how the UIAA works to reduce accidents caused by equipment failure.

 

Youth
We co-ordinate international camps, expeditions, treks and courses for young mountaineers and climbers under 30.

 

Access
We promote and lobby for the right of everyone to freely, but responsibly, hike and climb in the world’s mountains.

 

Ethics & Law
We are an advocate of common ethics and codes for mountaineering and climbing and we report on legal issues.

Ice Climbing
The UIAA promotes this adrenalin sport and organises the Ice Climbing World Cup and International Championships.

 

Medical
An international team of experts provides up-to-date information and advice on medical issues involving mountain sports.

 

Mountain Protection
Our vision is to unite science, sport, and tourism to preserve precious natural and cultural resources in mountain regions.

 

Training Standards
We have developed standards to encourage good practice in the training of voluntary leaders and instructors.

 
In Focus

Who is eligible for hut reciprocity discounts?

There are almost 1,200 mountain huts offering accommodation for a total of 66,000 people in the entire alpine region – from Slovenia to France, including the Pyrenees.
