The presence of top athletes from the UIAA Ice Climbing World Cup tour at the inaugural UIAA Open North American Championships in Bozeman, Montana was a boost to the development of the sport in America.

Among the 50 plus athletes who participated at the two-day competition (14 – 15 December, 2013) were Angelika Rainer of Italy who won the Women’s Lead and Janez Svoljšak, 20 of Slovenia, the winner of the Men’s Lead.

Also present was veteran French climber Stephanie Maureau and Russian speedster Pavel Dobrinsky.

Will Gadd, the legendary America climber who participated in the early days of the UIAA Ice Climbing World Cup Tour, and competed again in Bozeman after a long hiatus, came second in the Men’s Lead competition.

The Speed results were dominated by American and Canadian athletes, with Maureau being the only European to stand on the platform. Maureau, who placed second in Women’s Speed was defeated by American climber Kendra Stritch.

UIAA Ice Climbing Commission officials hope that the conclusion of the inaugural UIAA-styled event is an encouraging sign for the possible inclusion of the U.S. event in the UIAA Ice Climbing World Cup Tour which takes place in Korea, Italy, France, Romania and Russia every year between January and March.
