Medical Commission gives advice to sport climbers
14 Jan 2009
This page is focused on questions relating to nutrition, prevention and treatment of injuries, and healthy training principles for climbing at sea level. UIAA doctors provide answers to questions such as "What are the early signs of overuse injuries, and how can they be prevented?" , "How do I know whether I tore a finger tendon?" and " Should I buy climbing shoes one to two sizes smaller than my street wear shoes? " This resource is particularly useful for young climbers and their coaches, who want to ensure that children and teenagers develop good habits and don't over strain or damage their bodies while they are still growing. Most of the questions and answers are however relevant for climbers of all ages and abilities. There is advice on issues such as use of vitamin and mineral supplements, how to relieve joint pain, and how to deal with various common climbing injuries. If you have medical questions regarding mountaineering at high altitude and expeditions, please look at the separate page on Mountaineering medical FAQs.
