Major reductions in Nepal peak fees

05 May 2008

The Government of Nepal has announced heavy reductions on Permit Fees for all peaks, including Mount Everest. The reductions will be effective from the 2008 autumn season.

"This is truly great news", says Ang Tshering Sherpa, president of the Nepal Mountaineering Association and the Union of Asian Alpine Associations." It will benefit the people of Nepal by increasing tourism. Of course, it is also very encouraging news for ambitious and aspiring mountaineers and climbers of the world by increasing access to some of the greatest mountains in the world."

There will be no changes in the peak fees for the Spring season, but a reduction of 50% in the Autumn season fees, and 75% in the Summer and Winter season fees. The maximum number of expedition members per permit has also been changed from 12 to 15.

A final piece of good news is that the Nepali Government has announced that it will charge no permit fees for all peaks in the Mid-West and Far West Nepal during the next five years effective from 16 July 2008.
