Mt Everest
The UIAA welcomes China’s decision to ban people under 18 years of age from climbing Mount Everest, but is critical of the maximum age limit of 60, set by the Lhasa-based Chinese Tibet Mountaineering Association (CTMA).

International label
On the occasion of World Environment Day (June 5), the UIAA announced plans for a Mountain Protection label. The UIAA wants to make it easier for mountaineers to minimise their impact on the environment.

Injury classification
The Medical Commission has released a new recommendation to improve the reporting of mountaineering injuries. MedCom has also added a few Spanish and Italian translations to its English, German and Japanese recommendation papers.

Global Youth Summit
A summer of UIAA-sponsored youth climbing and mountaineering events Global Youth Summit events are now underway. This week young people gathered for a climbing and trekking event on the shores of Lake Ohrid in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia..

UPAME meeting
The UIAA has informed the Pan-American Union of Mountaineering and Climbing (UPAME) of its efforts to recognise continental organisations. Present at UPAME’s recent General Assembly in Huaraz, Peru (May 29-30) was UIAA Vice President, Jordi Colomer.
