UIAA signs MoU with Peace and Sport

The UIAA has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Peace and Sport, a Monaco-based organization that promotes peace through sport in poor areas of the world. Read more

 

 

Russians World Champions in Ice Climbing Speed discipline

Russian athletes dominated, as expected, the Speed discipline in the UIAA Ice Climbing World Championships, held on March 7-8 in Kirov, Russia. Read more

 

 

Korea’s Park remains king of Ice Climbing in Romania

Hee Yong Park of Korea has won the Lead event at the UIAA Ice Climbing World Championship in Busteni, Romania. For the women, it was Italy’s Angelika Rainer who came top in Lead. Read more

 

 

Bendler, Russians continue Ice Climbing World Cup domination

Austria’s Markus Bendler proved he is still the man to beat in the Lead event, winning the first competition of the UIAA Ice Climbing World Cup season in Cheongsong, Korea on January 8 and 9. Russia’s Maria Tolokonina came first in women’s Lead, while her compatriots, Maxim Tomilov and Irina Bagaeva took the honours in the men and women’s Speed events. Read more

 

 

Ice Climbing World Cup 2011

A new era is beginning in ice climbing. On January 8 and 9, the UIAA Ice Climbing World Cup season will get underway, with Lead and Speed competitions in Cheongsong, Korea – the first time the circuit makes a stop in Asia. Read more

 

 

UIAA introduces new Executive Director

UIAA responds to Everest age restrictions

The UIAA welcomes China’s decision to ban people under 18 years of age from climbing Mount Everest. According to press reports and climbing and trekking agencies in Nepal, the decision was taken on June 10 by the Lhasa-based Chinese Tibet Mountaineering Association (CTMA) - a branch of the Chinese Mountaineering Association, which is a UIAA Member. Plans announced to reduce environmental impact

On the occasion of World Environment Day (June 5), the UIAA is highlighting its commitment by announcing plans for a Mountain Protection label. Read more.

 

 

SportAccord call for nominations for “Spirit of Sport” Award

Nominations are now being accepted for the “Spirit of Sport” Award, which honours those who have laboured, excelled and triumphed in favour of the spirit of sport. The SportAccord, the International Sports Federations umbrella organisation, will present the award to individuals, organisations and special projects that have made major contributions to a better society through sport. Climbing crowns old, new champions

Austria's Markus Bendler and Russia’s Pavel Gulyaev have defended their Ice Climbing titles in the Lead and Speed disciplines respectively. This year’s women’s Lead champion is Anna Gallyamova of Russia, and her compatriot, Nadezda Shubina was crowned Speed queen. Read more.

 

 

Bendler, Russians continue their Ice Climbing dominance

Austria's Markus Bendler and France's Stephanie Maureau have claimed victories in the men's and women's Lead competitions of the UIAA Ice Climbing World Cup held in Saas Fee, Switzerland on January 22 and 23. Athletes Jeong Woon Wha and Hee Yong Park made a strong showing for Korea, both taking medals in Lead. Read more
 

 

Successful conclusion to first ever European Ice Climbing Youth Championship

The first ever European Ice Climbing Youth Championship has been concluded in Saas Grund, Switzerland. The men's overall winner was Russia's Alexey Iakovlev. His compatriot, Liubov Mikryukova, took top honours among the young women. The Swiss team also did well. Go here for more results. Read more

 

 

Austrian, Italian, and Russian athletes top in Ice Climbing World Cup kick-off in Kirov, Russia

Bendler lead, Russia speed Last year’s overall winner, Austria’s Markus Bendler, has proven he is still the man to beat on the Ice Climbing World Cup circuit. Bendler took first place in the challenging Lead competition this weekend in Kirov, Russia. For the women, Italy’s Angelika Rainer came first, letting the world know she is ready to challenge for the overall top spot, after finishing second in 2009. Russian men and women climbers are continuing their domination of the Speed event. Russian men captured the first 12 spots, led by Maxim Vlasov. For the women, it was Nadezda Shubina who finished first, followed by 15 of her countrywomen. Read more

 

 

UIAA enters into strategic partnerships with RedFox, Zamberlan

The UIAA’s Ice Climbing World Cup, the world’s premiere ice climbing competition series, kicks off in January with two new sponsors. Russian mountaineering clothing and equipment company RedFox and Italian footwear maker Zamberlan will be Presenting Sponsors for the UIAA Ice Climbing World Cup 2010 competition circuit. Officially published - Mountain Ethics Declaration

The UIAA has published its Mountain Ethics Declaration on December 11 to mark International Mountain Day.The Declaration spells out ethics of sportsmanship, respect for cultures and care for the environment, and it was approved at the UIAA General Assembly on October 10. Read more

The UIAA General Assembly on Saturday, October 10, approved a code to serve as a beacon of mountaineering values, spelling out ethics of sportsmanship, respect for cultures and care for the environment. Read more

 

 

New code lays out ethics and best practices

The UIAA is updating a mountain code, putting into ink mountaineering’s longstanding values of good sportsmanship, respect for cultures and care for the environment. The intent, say mountaineers involved in the process, is to create a document that reflects the sport’s high ideals and evolves with changing times. Read more

 

 

New partnership between UIAA and AISTS

The world’s largest climbing and mountaineering organisation and a leading sport academic centre are joining forces to collaborate on education programmes, research and personnel training. Read more

 

 

First-ever safety standard for braking devices

For the first time, the UIAA has developed a series of tests for braking devices designed to give climbers and mountaineers confidence that these critical pieces of gear meet the federation’s strict safety criteria. Read more

Disciplinary proceedings have been concluded against French Ski Mountaineering athlete Patrick Blanc, who tested positive after the 2008 Patrouille des glaciers, the Ski Mountaineering long distance teams’ world championship.Read more
