DESCRIPTION:Oh My Bloc is a bouldering festival\, held in Milly-la-Forêt (France)\, aiming to inform and educate climbers who are as passionate as we are about climbing in an environmentally-friendly way. We’re delighted that the passion for bouldering is contagious\, and in a magical forest\, we have to adapt our gym routines to a shared and fragile natural environment. \n\n\nThere will be rock climbing in a natural environment\, of course\, with adult and children’s competitions and introductory courses. There will also be a magnificent final on our newly-covered bouldering wall. DESCRIPTION:The location for the Mountaineering Ireland Summer Alpine Meet this year is Argentière\, Chamonix\, France. This region is perfectly suited to trekking\, hiking\, climbing and mountaineering\, as well as many other outdoor activities. \nThis Meet is for walkers\, rock climbers\, and mountaineers of all ages and abilities. It is a wonderful opportunity for all Mountaineering Ireland members\, new and old to meet established friends and make new ones\, go walking\, mountaineering and climbing in some of France’s most beautiful scenery. The purpose is to gather like-minded people together in an alpine area where they can walk\, rock climb\, boulder and climb snow covered and rocky alpine peaks. DESCRIPTION:The BMC Gower Festival is an annual event. The 2025 edition takes place from 5-7 September. The new venue is at a Scout Centre nearer to Swansea. This is a family event. \nServices: Pick up supplies on the way in past Swansea or while out in Gower during the day. Food stalls and bar available on the festival site\, together with gear stalls. \nAccommodation: Camping (space for tents and camper vans\, though these get booked quite quickly). Other campsites available if you don’t want to stay on the festival site. \nFood: Self-catering or buy at festival food stalls. Pubs and restaurants near climbing venues. \nTransport: Probably cars. Nearest train station is Swansea. \nItinerary: Arrive on Friday to climb if agreed. Otherwise meet the festival site on Friday evening. Climbing on Saturday\, and on Sunday for those not in a hurry to get home. Some free courses will be on offer. SUMMARY:2nd UIAA Mountain Sports Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Together with the hosting association\, the Kosovo Mountaineering and Sport Climbing Federation (FBNSK)\, the UIAA will hold a second edition of the Mountain Sports Symposium\, from 25-26 October 2025\, and running alongside its General Assembly. \nThe Symposium is targeted primarily at climbers and mountaineers\, whether beginners or experts\, from Kosovo and neighbouring countries in the Balkan region\, who wish to explore mountain medicine and safety topics from an international perspective. The event is partnered by the Petzl Foundation. \nAfter a successful inaugural event last April in Bariloche\, Argentina where the UIAA Medical Commission together with experts on training\, and safety topics imparted their knowledge and know-how during a three-day course\, the UIAA was approached to hold a similar event in Kosovo and as part of its General Assembly programme. \nPlease register from the following link. DESCRIPTION:Celebrated on 11 December annually\, the United Nations’ International Mountain Day is an international observance day whose goal is to raise awareness about the role that mountainous regions play in the lives of people and their importance to our planet. \nThe theme of the 2025 celebration is: \nGlaciers matter for water\, food and livelihoods in mountains and beyond” \nInternational Mountain Day 2025 is an opportunity to highlight the importance of glacier preservation for agriculture\, water security and the livelihoods of vulnerable mountain communities. \nGlaciers\, vast reserves of ice and snow found across the planet\, are far more than frozen landscapes – they are lifelines for ecosystems and communities. Yet\, these critical components of the Earth’s systems are undergoing rapid and alarming transformations with profound consequences for us all. \nThe United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 2025 as the International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation to raise awareness on the vital role glaciers\, snow and ice play in the climate system and water cycle\, as well as the far-reaching impacts of rapid glacial melt. It aims to promote global collaboration\, strengthen scientific research\, and promote policies and actions to protect glaciers and cryospheric systems. \nGlaciers and ice sheets hold around 70 percent of the world’s freshwater. Their accelerated melting represents not only an environmental crisis\, but a humanitarian one\, threatening agriculture\, clean energy\, water security and billions of peoples’ lives. Their retreat\, driven by rising global temperatures\, is a stark indicator of the climate crisis. Melting glaciers and thawing permafrost increase risks such as floods\, glacier lake outburst floods\, landslides or enhanced erosion and sediment\, endangering downstream populations and critical infrastructure. \nEconomically\, sectors like agriculture\, hydropower\, mountain tourism and transportation feel the strain of glacier changes. For many Indigenous Peoples\, glaciers are sacred\, and their disappearance signifies a loss of identity and connection to nature. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nInformation about the UIAA’s own activities on 11 December will be published shortly.
