Gmail login error messages — and what each one means
Match the message on your screen to the row below. The wording is close to what Google shows during sign-in and recovery.

How to sign in to Gmail on a computer
- Open your browser and go to Gmail.
- Choose your account, or select Use another account.
- Enter your Google Account email address or an associated phone number accepted by Google.
- Follow Google's sign-in prompt. Depending on your account, this may ask for your password or offer a passkey.
- Complete any additional identity check, then open your inbox.
If you reach a page describing Gmail, choose Sign in. If the inbox belongs to someone else, use the account menu to change accounts.
Check the address before entering credentials. Start from the Google link above. An article about Gmail should never need your email password or a verification code.
Sign in on Android, iPhone or iPad
Android
Open the Gmail app and tap your profile picture or initial. Choose Add another account → Google, then follow the account sign-in prompts. If your account is already listed, select it to open its mailbox.
iPhone and iPad
Open the Gmail app, tap your profile picture and choose Add another account → Google. Complete the Google sign-in process and any verification requested. On a fresh installation, the app may first display a sign-in option.
You can also open Gmail in your phone's browser. Use the account menu to check which address is currently selected.
Recover a forgotten Gmail password or email address
If you forgot your password
Go to Google Account recovery, enter the account address and answer the questions shown. Google determines which verification options are available. Reset the password when prompted.
If you forgot your Gmail address
Select Forgot email? on Google's sign-in page. Google asks for a recovery phone number or email and the full name associated with the account. Follow the verification steps to find matching usernames.
If recovery keeps failing
Try from a device and browser you have used with the account, in a location where you normally sign in — these all feed Google's confidence that it is really you. Google's account recovery tips explain how to answer its questions. Recovery is not guaranteed, and this website cannot override Google's checks.
Important: no paid "account recovery service", agent or phone number can restore a Google Account faster or more reliably than Google's own flow. Anyone claiming they can — for a fee, or in exchange for your code — is a scam.

Can't complete verification or log in without a phone?
If your usual second step is unavailable, choose Try another way when Google offers it. Depending on what you previously set up, you may be able to use:
- A prompt on another phone already signed in to your account.
- An authenticator app code or a saved backup code.
- A registered security key or a passkey.
- A recovery email address, or another phone number configured for verification.
So logging in without your usual phone number is often possible — but only through a method you set up earlier. Google decides which methods are offered for each attempt. If none work, follow account recovery, and approve only prompts for sign-ins you started yourself.
Signed in, but the wrong inbox opens?
If Gmail opens an account you did not want, you are signed in to more than one. On a computer, select the profile picture or initial in the upper-right corner and choose the correct account, or Add another account / Use another account.

Sign-in and "account recovery" are among the most impersonated moments online. Learn the patterns before you get caught out.
Fake login pages
Links in emails or ads that open a page looking exactly like Google's. You only ever type your password on accounts.google.com / mail.google.com — check the address bar first.
"Your account will be suspended"
Urgent emails or texts pushing a sign-in link. Go to Gmail directly instead of clicking. Urgency is the oldest pressure tactic.
Code-forwarding requests
Anyone who asks you to read out or forward a Google verification code is trying to take the account. Google never asks you to share a code with a person.
Fake "recovery services"
Sites or numbers that promise to recover a locked account for a fee. Only Google's own recovery flow can restore access — paid "helpers" are scams.
Safe rule of thumb: your password, backup codes and verification codes are entered only on Google's own pages and never shared with anyone — not even "support". Enabling a passkey or 2-Step Verification makes a stolen password far less useful.

Why is my Gmail login not working even with the correct password?
Your account may use 2-Step Verification or Google may require an extra identity check, or your password manager filled an old password. Confirm the account address, then follow the verification prompt or choose another available method.
How do I recover my Gmail account?
Use Google Account recovery, enter the account address and answer the questions from a device and location you normally use. Recovery is not guaranteed, and no third-party site can override Google's checks.
Can I log in to Gmail without my phone number?
Often yes, using another configured method such as a signed-in device, recovery email, authenticator code, backup code or passkey. Choose Try another way when Google offers it. See the verification section above.
What is the official Gmail login website?
Open mail.google.com. If you are signed out, Gmail directs you through Google's account sign-in flow. Enter your password only on Google's own pages.
Can I sign in without typing my password?
If a passkey is set up, Google may let you sign in with your device's fingerprint, face recognition or screen lock instead of a password.
Can this website recover my Gmail account for me?
No. This page gives instructions and links to Google. Never pay a service or share a password, backup code or verification code with anyone claiming they can recover an account for you.
