Snapshot

The Rwenzori Climate-Resilient Mountain Hut Project aims to design, build and operate a sustainable, eco-friendly mountain hut in Uganda’s Rwenzori Mountains National Park. This initiative combines climate-resilience, sustainable tourism and outdoor sports, specifically catering to climbers, mountaineers and adventure seekers. The hut concept features a climate-resilient design, sustainable energy, utilizing sources such as solar or wind power, eco-friendly and locally sourced materials, as well as effective waste management systems to minimize waste and promote recycling.

A concept still in very early stages, the organisation envisions building a climate-resilient hut, involving local communities, and seeing it as part of sustainable development and sustainable tourism. The idea is relevant, and important to realise to attract more climbers and mountaineers to the Rwenzori area. Whilst an overall work plan is developed, including the receiving of permits and the searching of support and finance, the concept needs further elaboration from a technical point.

Project Objectives and Vision

A new concept idea, the Rwenzori Climate-Resilient Mountain Hut Project is anticipated to start in August 2025 and end in August 2027 in the Rwenzori Mountains National Park of Uganda. The project aims to provide safe accommodation, offering a source, comfortable and sustainable place for climbers to rest and acclimate. It is also to support climbing expeditions, serving as a hub for climbers, providing access to guides, equipment and essential services. Through the hut, the Agency for Rural and Urban Development seeks to promote sustainable tourism, encouraging responsible tourism practices, regarding environmental impact and supporting local communities. It further wishes to enhance outdoor experiences, offering a unique opportunity for climbers and outdoor enthusiasts to connect with nature, appreciate the beauty of the Rwenzori Mountains, and experience sustainable tourism practices.

The Rwenzori Climate-Resilient Mountain Hub Project aims to contribute to:

  1. Climate Change Mitigation, reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable practices in the tourism industry.
  2. Sustainable Development, supporting local communities and promoting eco-friendly tourism practices.
  3. Enhanced Outdoor experience, providing a unique and sustainable experience for climbers, mountaineers, and outdoor enthusiasts.

By combining climate resilience, sustainable tourism and outdoor sports, the Rwenzori Climate Resilient Mountain Hut Project is looking to offer a unique opportunity to promote environmentally friendly practices while supporting the growth of sustainable tourism in the Rwenzori Mountains.
