Ang Tshering Sherpa was born in Khumjung village in the Khumbu region of Nepal, where he was one of the first pupils to study at the school Sir Edmund Hillary built.
He was only eleven years old when he began working on mountaineering expeditions as an interpreter between foreign climbers and local Nepalis. In 1963, he walked from Banepa to Tyangboche with his father, Who was responsible for managing the baggage train of the first successful American Everest Expedition.
His early involvement in mountaineering left a strong impression on him, igniting his passion for mountaineering. As a young man, Ang Tshering climbed many Himalayan peaks and mountains, climbing above eight thousand meters on Mount Everest and Mount Dhaulagiri. He has also climbed many peaks in the European Alps in the 1980s and 1990s when he visited his mountain guide friends in Switzerland, Austria and Italy each summer.
When Nepal and Tibet grew in popularity as mountaineering and trekking destinations, Ang Tshering realised that there was a pronounced lack of professional and reliable outfitters. In 1982, he established a company offering logistical support for mountaineering and trekking expeditions. Over the last 30 years his organisation has worked with many mountaineers from around the world.
Respected for his immense knowledge and unwavering passion for Himalayan Climbing, Ang Tshering has been instrumental in shaping many of Nepal’s mountaineering tourism and environmental policies.
In the mid 1980s, Ang Tshering was invited by the Tibet Autonomous Region Government to visit their mountains and help set up logistical systems to make it possible to climb the mountains in Tibet.
He has served three terms as President of Nepal Mountaineering Association, was president of the Union of Asian Alpine Associations and a founding board member of Nepal Tourism board. During his tenure as President of Nepal Mountaineering Association, Ang Tshering was the convenor for the Golden Jubilee celebration of the firsts ascents of Mt. Everest (2003), Mt. Cho Oyu (2004), Mt. Kanchenjunga (2005), Mt. Makalu (2005), Mt Manaslu (2006), Mt.Lhotse and Mt. Dhaulagiri (2010).
He was also the coordinator for the implementing committee, helping organise the International Mountain Tourism and Environment Conference (2006) in Kathmandu, where mountaineering associations, environmental organisations, private sector and government representatives from 17 countries participated. Ang Tshering was also the Honorary leader of the ‘China Tibet Expeditions to all 14 peaks above 8,000m’ when they were ascending Mt. Lhotse.
Ang Tshering was also the leader of the Nepal-China Golden Jubilee Friendship Peak Expedition (2005) organized by The Government of Nepal & China, the Vice Chairman of 30th Jubilation of Women’s First Ascent on Mt. Everest celebration Committee by Government of Nepal -2005 and leader of Nepal-Japan Golden Jubilee Friendship Nangpai Gosum (7,321m) Expedition 2006 organized by Nepal Mountaineering Association & Japan Workers Alpine Federation, representing the Governments of Nepal and Japan.
He is currently a Member of the National Tourism Council under the chairmanship of the Prime Minister of Nepal, the Honorary Consul for Belgium to Nepal and heads various companies he runs together with his son Dawa Steven Sherpa.
