An ice climber’s endeavour to promoting glaciers of Iran
PROJECT TITLE
A Noble Horse That Limps
NAME OF INDIVIDUAL
Abolfazl Zamani
Snapshot
What once felt like ascending a powerful, noble force of nature now feels like “riding a noble horse that limps”— a poetic yet painful image that captures the deep emotional and environmental impact of glacier loss. The project is a long-term, grassroots initiative founded in 2007 and led by Abolfazl Zamani — an accomplished ice climber, mountaineer, and recipient of the Golden Ice Axe Award from the I.R.Iran Mountaineering & Sports Climbing Federation to raise awareness and promote the protection of Iran’s glaciers. With decades of experience climbing the icy faces of Iran’s high mountains, including Damavand, Alam Kuh, Sabalan, Zardkuh, and Oshtorankuh, Zamani has personally witnessed the alarming retreat and degradation of the country’s glaciers.
Through the project, climbing is not just about physical achievement, but becomes a tool for exploration, awareness, and advocacy.

Led by an ice climber, the project engages climbing clubs and outdoor athletes in environmental advocacy. The initiative demonstrates strong community engagement on protecting glaciers in Iran. Through this ambassador programme, storytelling, and outreach have transformed mountaineers into environmental advocates.
Project Objectives and Vision
The project was born from the realization that glaciers are more than frozen masses; they are vital sources of water, key elements of mountain ecosystems, and symbols of climate stability. Their loss presents a serious challenge, especially in a beautiful, vast, ancient, and yet arid land like Iran, where every glacier plays a critical ecological and cultural role.
The initiative creates a bridge between mountain sports and environmental responsibility. It positions climbers as frontline observers and communicators of climate change in high-altitude environments. The project unfolds through four main pillars:
- Field Documentation: Zamani and his team climb various glaciers across seasons to capture visual and observational data on glacial retreat, melt patterns, and ecological shifts, often from remote areas inaccessible to non-athletes.
- Public Awareness: Through storytelling, documentaries, social media, and exhibitions, the project brings the urgent message of vanishing glaciers to both the mountaineering community and the wider public.
- Education and Scientific Collaboration: The project collaborates with scientists, students, mountaineering clubs, and NGOs to promote glacier literacy and cultivate a sense of environmental stewardship within the outdoor community.
- Advocacy and Outdoor Ethics: By encouraging low-impact practices and emphasizing environmental values, the project helps shape a culture of care among outdoor athletes.
The project’s main objective is to help Iranian climbers recognize that the white surfaces they see on high peaks are not just snow, but vital glaciers. Once this awareness grows among climbers, it can spread outward. Zamani believes that by strengthening the core audience, its ripple effect will reach others: environmentalists, local communities, and eventually policymakers.
One of the proudest achievements has been the creation of a volunteer ambassador network. For that 70 Glacier Ambassadors among influential mountaineers across Iran were identified and trained. These individuals received specialized knowledge about glaciers, their environmental role, and the threats they face. Each ambassador committed to spreading awareness in their local communities, clubs, and climbing circles. As a symbolic gesture and a conversation starter, they placed a glacier awareness sticker on their helmets. This small but visible act helped turn every climb into a public statement of environmental responsibility.
