The annual UIAA Ice Climbing World Youth Championships took place in Tyumen, Russia from 26-28 February. Nearly fifty youngsters in U16, U19 and U21 categories took on speed and boulder competitions.
Owing to travel restrictions and the continued impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, the number of countries able to send athletes to the event was impacted. Five nations were represented – the Czech Republic, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and hosts Russia. Those who did attend braved the freezing climes in the southwestern part of the West Siberian Plain.
U16s – Star performers were Arina Kolegova (female) and Roman Shubin who claimed both the boulder and speed crowns.
U19s – Daria Glotova won both the female speed and boulder titles. The men’s titles were split – Maksim Reshetnikov claimed the boulder crown before finishing third in speed as Danila Bikulov took gold.
U22s – Iuliia Filateva claimed the women’s boulder title while Irina Dubovsteva won the speed competition. This despite the presence of regular World Cup medallist Valeriia Bogdan. Vladislav Temerev won the men’s boulder crown and saw off another World Cup star Nikika Glazyrin to win the speed event.
Russia proved the dominant country winning the team ranking.
