Creating a Gmail account is completely free and takes less than 5 minutes. Your new Gmail address gives you access to all Google services — Gmail, Google Drive, YouTube, Google Maps, Google Photos and more — using a single login. This guide covers how to sign up for Gmail on desktop, Android and iPhone.
Works on Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari and all major browsers on Windows, Mac and Linux.
Go to accounts.google.com/signup in your browser — this is Google’s official Gmail account creation page.
Enter your first name and last name in the name fields. You can use your real name or a preferred display name.
Choose your Gmail username (the part before @gmail.com). This becomes your permanent email address. See the username tips section below for help choosing one.
If your chosen username is taken, Google will suggest alternatives — or you can try different variations until you find an available one.
Create a strong password — at least 8 characters with uppercase, lowercase, numbers and a symbol. Confirm it by typing it again in the second field.
Click Next. On the next screen, enter your phone number (optional but recommended for account recovery) and a recovery email address if you have one.
Enter your date of birth and select your gender (you can choose “Prefer not to say”). Click Next.
Google will ask to verify your phone number by sending a code — enter the 6-digit code you receive by SMS.
Review Google’s Privacy and Terms — scroll to the bottom and click I agree to create your account.
Your Gmail account is created. You will be redirected to your new inbox at mail.google.com.
✅ Account created! Your new Gmail address is yourusername@gmail.com. You can now use it to sign in to all Google services.
💡 No phone number? Phone verification is optional during signup on desktop. Skip it if you prefer — you can add a recovery phone later at myaccount.google.com/recovery.
Create a Gmail account directly through your Android phone settings or the Gmail app.
Method 1 — Through Phone Settings (Recommended)

Enter your date of birth and gender, then tap Next.
Choose a Gmail username from the suggestions or tap Create your own Gmail address to type a custom one.
Create and confirm a strong password, then tap Next.
Add a recovery phone number (optional) and tap Next.
Review and accept Google’s Privacy and Terms by tapping I agree.
Your Gmail account is added to your Android device. Open the Gmail app to access your new inbox.
Method 2 — Through Gmail App
Open the Gmail app. Tap your profile picture at the top right → Add another account.
Select Google → tap Create account → For myself.
Follow the same steps as Method 1 from step 4 onwards.
💡 Tip: Creating an account through Settings automatically syncs Gmail, Google Drive, Google Photos and Contacts on your device.
Create a Gmail account on iPhone through the Gmail app or Safari browser.
Method 1 — Gmail App (Recommended)
Download the Gmail app from the App Store (free, by Google LLC) if not already installed.
Open Gmail → tap Sign in → tap Google → tap Create account.

👤 Gmail Username Tips — How to Choose a Good Gmail Address
Your Gmail username is permanent — you cannot change it after signup. Choose carefully using these tips.
✅
Use your real name
firstname.lastname@gmail.com looks professional and is easy to remember. Best for work and personal use.
🔢
Add numbers smartly
If your name is taken, add birth year or a meaningful number: john.smith1990 or jsmith42.
🎯
Keep it short
Shorter addresses are easier to share and type. Aim for under 20 characters total.
🚫
Avoid special chars
Only letters, numbers and dots are allowed. No underscores, hyphens or special characters.
🔍 Gmail Username Format Checker
Check if your chosen username follows Gmail’s rules before signing up. (Note: this checks format only — actual availability is checked on Google’s signup page.)
ℹ️ Gmail username rules: 6–30 characters · Letters (a-z), numbers (0-9) and dots (.) only · Cannot start or end with a dot · Cannot have two consecutive dots · Case-insensitive (john.doe = John.Doe)
🔑 Gmail Password Guide — Create a Strong Password
Your Gmail password protects your entire Google account. Use the checker below to test your password strength before signing up.
🔐 Password Strength Checker
Enter a password to check strength
At least 8 characters
Uppercase letter (A-Z)
Lowercase letter (a-z)
Number (0-9)
Symbol (!@#$%)
12+ characters (recommended)
💡 Password tips: Never reuse passwords across sites. Use a password manager like Bitwarden (free) or 1Password to generate and store strong passwords. Avoid personal info like birthdays, names or phone numbers in your password.
⚠️ Avoid these: password123, your name, your birthday, “gmail” or “google”, keyboard patterns like qwerty123, or any password you use on another site.

Already Have a Gmail Account?
Go to our Gmail login guide for step-by-step sign-in instructions on desktop, Android and iPhone.
Yes — Gmail is completely free. Creating a Gmail account costs nothing and there are no monthly fees. Google provides 15 GB of free storage shared across Gmail, Google Drive and Google Photos. Paid plans (Google One) are available for more storage but are entirely optional.
No — your Gmail username (the part before @gmail.com) is permanent and cannot be changed once created. You can change your display name (the name people see when you send emails) at any time in Gmail Settings → Accounts and Import → Name, but the email address itself stays the same. If you want a different address, you’ll need to create a new Gmail account.
Google allows you to create up to 4 Gmail accounts linked to the same phone number. There is no official limit to how many accounts you can have in total — you can use different phone numbers for verification to create more. You can be signed into multiple Gmail accounts simultaneously in the same browser by clicking your profile picture → Add another account.
On desktop, a phone number is optional during Gmail signup — you can skip the verification step. On mobile (Android and iPhone), Google may require phone verification depending on your device and region. Adding a recovery phone number is strongly recommended even if optional, as it makes account recovery much easier if you ever get locked out.
The minimum age to create a standard Gmail account is 13 years old in most countries. In some countries, the age of digital consent is higher (e.g. 16 in some EU countries). For children under 13, parents can create a supervised Google account using Google Family Link at families.google.com/familylink.
No — Gmail requires a Google account. When you create a Gmail address, you are automatically creating a Google account at the same time. Your Gmail address is your Google account username and can be used to sign in to all Google services including YouTube, Google Drive, Google Maps and Google Play.
Google will show a message saying the username is unavailable and suggest alternatives. You can accept a suggested username or try different variations — adding numbers, dots, or slightly different spelling. Common names like john.smith are almost always taken, so try combinations like j.smith1990, johnsmith.work or similar variations.
After creating your account: (1) Add a profile photo — click your initials in the top right → Manage Google Account → Personal info → Photo. (2) Set up 2-Step Verification at myaccount.google.com/security for better security. (3) Add a recovery phone and email at myaccount.google.com/recovery. (4) Explore Gmail settings (gear icon) to set up your signature, notifications and inbox layout.
