Let’s Talk about Mountains: A cinematic approach to North Korea

UIAA

What do you think of when you hear “North Korea”? – A film team from the Swiss Alpine Museum toured the mountainous North Korean peninsula during the brief phase of the inter-Korean thaw in 2018-19.

As the Swiss Alpine Museum writes:

The team climbed mountain peaks with hiking groups, visited school classes, looked over the shoulder of artists, traveled to farms in the hilly province and stopped at the largest North Korean ski resort. Cinematic micro-stories tell of an everyday life that hardly ever appears in the media. Forty conversations give a voice to people who are in danger of disappearing behind the political system and our images of it. They are spontaneous, but also arranged encounters – as touching as they are challenging when it comes to the question of what what is shown means when we want to understand more than what we see.

This exhibition is running at the Swiss Alpine Museum in Bern from March 2021 until early July 2022. The Swiss Alpine Museum is supported by the Swiss Alpine Club (SAC), a founding partner. Member organisations of the UAAA, Union of Asian Alpine Associations, also supported the exhibition conception.

For those unable to visit the exhibition, a dedicated magazine is available to purchase and further information available here.
