Outdoor Research publishes inaugural Impact Report

Outdoor Research, partner of the UIAA Ice Climbing World Tour, recently published its inaugural Impact Report.

As part of its communications around this year’s International Mountain Day (11 December), the UIAA is sharing a number of notable updates related to its own commitment to tackling climate change and that of its members and partners.

Over the last several years, Outdoor Research has made significant strides toward a greener, more ethical future, stating:

“Our responsibility extends to every aspect of our business, from nurturing supplier relationships and championing workers’ rights to sourcing sustainable materials and promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion within our workforce. We’re proud to say that we’ve set out along the path toward carbon neutrality by switching to renewable energy sources and implementing advanced tracking tools to benchmark our carbon output reduction efforts.

The report outlines OR’s successes, challenges, and the ambitious environmental and social targets they’ve set themselves.

The report focuses specifically on:

Preferred Materials Processes and Philosophy: OR’s dedication to sustainable practices is evident in its collections’ extensive use of recycled materials and bluesign®-approved fabrics. Moreover, OR prioritises animal welfare, ensuring it remains a top ethical priority in its sourcing and manufacturing processes.

Per- or Polyfluorinated Chemicals (PFAS) Strategy: As part of OR’s ongoing efforts to enhance its environmental footprint, the company has embarked on a mission to remove intentionally added PFAS from its products, with full implementation scheduled to begin in 2024. By doing so, OR aims to reduce the potential harm caused by these chemicals to both people and the environment.

GHG Reduction Targets and Actions: Recognising the urgent need to address climate change, OR has set ambitious goals to reduce our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. OR proudly reports that it currently powers 100% of its direct-owned operations with renewable energy, significantly reducing its carbon footprint. Looking ahead, OR has established a target of a 48% reduction in its Scope 3 GHG emissions per unit of value added by 2030, using 2021 as the base year. This commitment ensures that OR continuously strives for greater sustainability in its operations.

Commitment to Fair Labor and Human Rights: OR steadfastly uphold human rights and ensure fair labor practices throughout our supply chain. By working closely with its partners and suppliers, OR aims to create an environment that respects and protects the rights and well-being of workers.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Initiatives: OR believes that diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) are essential pillars of a successful and impactful organisation. As such, it has implemented DEI initiatives that foster an inclusive culture within the outdoor industry and its own offices. OR celebrates diversity and strives to create an environment where everyone feels valued, respected, and empowered to contribute their unique perspectives.
