Position Available: UIAA Mountaineering Commission Vice President

The UIAA is recruiting for a new Vice President of its Mountaineering Commission. The position is open from May 2024.

The UIAA Mountaineering Commission (MountCom) deals with advice, guidance and advocacy support on mountaineering and climbing issues that affect, or are affected by, practices, ethics and style prevalent in the mountaineering and climbing community world-wide. as well as support engagement with those with whom we share the mountain space (landowners, Indigenous and local communities, etc.). These include the aforementioned ethics and style aspects, as well as socio-economic aspects such as cultural values.

UIAA Mountaineering Commission Vice President
(Voluntary position)

Your tasks:

  • As a Commission Vice-President, you will work closely with the President and other members of MountComm.
  • Coordinate MountCom output with project management and assistance from the UIAA Office
  • Based on the UIAA Strategic Plan, help to identify, projects of relevance to the more than 90 UIAA member associations and the climbing and mountaineering community
  • Assist with the overview, implementation and execution of MountComm projects
  • Assist with the presentation of said projects and their results to the Executive Committee and management Board of the UIAA
  • Assist with the presentation of the results to the Genaeral Assembly of the UIAA
  • Quarterly report on project status and MountComm output to the UIAA Management Board

Your profile:

  • Considerable experience as a climber and mountaineer
  • Relevant experience in or familiarity with the workings of one or more member associations
  • Familiarity with mountaineering topics particularly style and ethics such that the interests of climbers and mountaineers world-wide are protected
  • Excellent communication skills in English such that interaction with outside organisations, e.g. the media, are enabled
  • Proven social and communication skills in a diverse international environment
  • Proactive team leader and eager to take initiative while delegating tasks
  • Availability for regular online meetings and up to two in-person meetings annually, including meeting preparations and follow-ups
